Experimenting the possibilities of Loofah

In the past few years, I have participated in the research project,  “Work for Livelihood “ in Myanmar. And also had chanced to participated Lingnan University and the Hong Kong Art Institute, arranged students to apprentice to learn and exhibits works from the exhibition “Craftopia HK”.

The project is to teach people to understand and appreciate the value of the lesson in order to explore the value of craftsmanship, hand-made help with the craftsmen.

My first encounter of loofah as a medium was at a graduation exhibition in Kyoto Art and Design University, where the artist demonstrated the materials uniqueness, I was inspired by one of the material - loofah structure beneath its surface.

After those experience. I began to observe the impact of natural resources, explored the live of the local craftsmanship and developed my art work.

When i study the Higher Diploma in Fine Art, I was intrigued by the material during my study in art, during local material research I found out that there is an old grandmother in Ping Che who grows her own loofah. I used loofah instead of the paper in clay.  I want to explore the relationship between nature and ceramics, with an aim to incorporate and generate new ideas and perspective.

Loofah can be deconstruct to horizontally, vertically, diagonally and flatten, each exposes different forms and revealing tremendous possibilities. It can be used as an alternative packaging material for impact protection.  The attractive performance of loofah is attributed to its hierarchical structures. My inspirations derive from loofah, to decide how to interpret the object and determine to present it.
